Places of interest in Dalston, E8
The London Fields area used to be another neglected corner of East London[citation needed], usually lumped in as part of Dalston[citation needed], but the people who have stayed[clarification needed] have seen enormous change and it has emerged as a district with its own character. House prices in the area have risen 20% in the past two years[citation needed] and there has been an influx of young, upwardly mobile professionals bringing a perceived gentrification of the area with them[citation needed]. The main shopping street of Broadway Market boasts a wide selection of boutiques, pubs and cafes and thanks to these ? and the successful Saturday market ? the area is regarded as thriving.
In Tudor times, many members of the court used the church, including Ralph Sadleir (Bryck Place), Thomas Sutton (The Tan House), Thomas Cromwell and the Earl of Northumberland (Brooke House). Samuel Pepys visited the church in 1667, after resting at the local Mermaid Inn, he remarked on the fine organ but confessed in his diary that which we went chiefly to see was the young ladies of the schools, whereof this is great store, very pretty.[2] Hackney being renowned for its girls schools, at the time.[1]
Hackney was a parish in the ancient county of Middlesex. The parish church of St John-at-Hackney, was built in 1789, replacing the nearby former 16th century parish church dedicated to St Augustine (pulled down in 1798). The original tower of that church was retained to hold the bells until the new church could be strengthened; the bells were finally removed to the new St John's in 1854. See details of other, more modern, churches within the original parish boundaries below.
It is currently classed as one of the more deprived areas in London[1] and qualifies for the higher Stamp Duty threshold.[2]
It was never well used, mainly as it was near South Tottenham and Seven Sisters stations, the latter gave a much faster link to The City. The station was closed on 9 August 1942 as a wartime austerity measure and never reopened. The station building survives, used by a newsagent which is a Transport for London (TfL) ticketstop, so it is possible since the line become part of the London Overground run by TfL in 2007 to buy tickets in the station for passing trains which no longer stop there.
